European Toys Safety Directive (TSD) 2009/48/EC
European Directive 2009/48/EC is Toys Safety Directive (TSD) and is the upgraded version of former directive 88/378/EEC. It covers all safety standards related to toys and provides various guidelines for consumers and manufacturers. Toy Safety Directive (TSD) gives complete guidance from Toy’s Definition to particular safety requirement of toy such as Physical & Mechanical properties, Flammability, Electrical properties, Radioactivity, Hygiene and it provides strict requirements of chemicals in the toys and related childcare articles.
The directive restricts certain chemicals susceptible to CMR (cancerogenic mutagenic reprotoxic), 19 Heavy Metals, Allergic Fragrances, Organic Chemical Compounds (such as solvents inhalation & migration, plasticizers, flame retardants, preservatives, colourants, monomers, primary aromatic amines, N-nitrosamine & N-nitrosatable substances) and BPA (bisphenol-A) beyond defined threshold limits.
Many substrates that are generally used in toy industries (such as polymers, woods, leathers, textiles, papers) need to avoid above listed chemicals during printing and coating process. Most used substrate in toy industries is polymer (such as ABS, PA, PC, PE, PAc, PP, PS, PU, Special PVC, TPE, POM, PET, PMMA) which is composed with monomers, solvents, plasticizers, colorants, flame retardants that need to be controlled.
