It is also called as 3 color systems for  various industries. But The company PANTONE produced color cards for the cosmetic industry. Lawrence Herbert, who was an employee of PANTONE company since 1956, bought the company in 1962. He developed his own system for color selection and communication. 1963 he brought the PANTONE Matching System on the market. Till today he is known in the print industry worldwide. In 2010 he did invent new colours and  extend the colour range by 1341 colors. Got a new name – Pantone Plus Series.  In 2012 it was further extended by 336 new colors .
Pantone plus-series follow the Pantone Matching System for printing colors.

Pantone textile color system is used for specification, data table and rated specs of textile colors.
Pantone plastics system offers colors in form of transparent and opaque plastic chips
As it has its own color coding  standards there is no chance of confusing or error with other systems. Obviously there are cross-references for color comparison from one Pantone color system to another.

Pantone Goe-system (since 2007) was discontinued in February 2014
